Hello,

I'm a real beginner, installing a new shower, and will soon start on tiling the shower walls. Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but I'm curious: what do I do where the concrete backer board meets the already finished drywall?

(I tore out the old tile and backer board, so the shower is down to the studs now, but the rest of the bathroom still has finished/painted drywall.)

I imagine that I would make the last column of tiles overlap this joint, but I figure I still need to do something where these two materials meet underneath the tile? Do I have to scrape down the drywall at that joint so it's bare and use fiberglass tape and mortar?

Thanks!

If the seam is tight and no gaps, overlapping it with tile is fine provided it is flush. If the drywall is a glossy paint or old drywall compound from an old seam, then sand it down. Taping it over is not needed.

I like to slip in a stud where the backer meets the drywall and fasten.
Next I like to fill in the gap and tape it (membrane).
Finally tile over it.
