Considering an addition to current home. Question, the current well is located where the new addition is to be placed. Is it possible to decommission the well, build over it and drill a new well in a different location?

Yes you will need a licensed driller to remove all the equipment, pull the casing, and properly plug the well. Then they will just have to move over and drill a new well, but they maybe be able to use the old pump and equipment.

My father had a customer years ago who was putting on addition over the well. He called, asked my fathers advise, then went ahead and put the addition over the well.

This was in the days when there was either gslvanized or poly pipe.

Long story short, not too many years later my father cut a hole in the floor, ceiling & Sheetrock so he could pull the steel pipe & change the pump

I would try and design around the well especially if its shallow and on poly. Design it into a closet or room next to a big door or window.
