It's me again with a different type question. Just removed my wife's toilet (not tall enough) and the tank was right against the wall (rubbed); so if the center of drain is 11 7/8" why would the tank rub and should I replace with same size rough in, 12". Could it be just that manufacture not having good quality control or thickness of tank.

The old toilets used most of the 12" rough-in
In the 80's, builders started putting wainscoting and tile behind the toilets in the bathrooms. Styles had changed. I started doing my roughs at 12.5" from the wall and even 13" at times so that when we came back to set toilets they would still fit.

Then the manufacturers started adding space behind the tanks, probably got tired of complaints that toilets weren't fitting anymore. Any new 12" rough toilet will work fine there.

In the 1920's, they used to bolt the tanks to the wall. Things continue to change and evolve.

I see in picture that this tank is 7 3/8" and my tank is about an inch wider at the top, so that must be the problem. Thanks, off to buy new toilet.

Great fixed! but also sometimes the tanks aren't pulled down to bowl exactly perfect allowing it to cock backward a little toward wall. Or the floor outta level . its an imperfect world
