The home I just bought has begun short cycling. The pump turns off and on every 10 seconds while the water is on. The pressure gauge by the pressure switch constantly reads 40 whether the pump is on or off. Could it be as simple as replacing the pressure gauge? The switch is wired correctly and the contact points look good and make contact as they should. I need to measure the pressure in my tank, but it has the correct "hollow on top, full on bottom" sound from what I've read about.

First replace the gauge so you can see whats going on . You have to add air to the pressure tank (2 psi less than cut on) or replace the tank if it has a blown bladder. If you still have a problem you may have a switch that isn't set properly. If it looks to be older just replace it.

Replace the pressure switch. It's bad, but that is not the problem. Your pressure tank is bad if it's a bladder tank, or your air recharge system is not working if it's a hydropnuematic tank. If you don't fix if, you will be buying a new pump also

Found the problem. The previous owners didn't even have the wires connected properly. Now everything is running as it should.

How long does the pump run at minimum now?

You still have a problem if you did not replace the pressure gauge, and if the pressure gauge said 40 PSI all of the time.
