My old pump has only 2 black cables and my new one comes with 2 black and a green, does the green ground cable have to be connected so the pump will work?

No, it is a 230v pump that only takes two hot wires, the ground wire is there because people were using them in ponds, lakes & to meet codes.

NEC mandates that the green be bonded to the casing and well cap, doesn't matter if it's 115v or 230v.

As professionals, we need to be very cautious about advising any work that does not meet local and/or national codes.

All work that I do is to the current NEC codes, whether it is inspected or not.
