So a gap that allows for a piece of paper to slide under the right front/side won't cause an issue in time? The chalk will be enough to prevent a problem, like a cracked flange?

Typically you will not put caulk in the back. I think you are wanting some indication of a leak, and the un-caulked part provides that.

You don't want to trap water under a bowl if it's leaking. Our plumbing code requires that the back is open for that reason.
There is nothing worse than someone sealing all the way around the bowl to stop a leaking wax seal, when in reality, you want to see leaks right away and fix them before the floor rots out underneath your feet.
