I have dual gas heaters which have malfunctioned after an interruption of water service.
Several days ago, the pressure regulator malfunctioned at our community well and water levels were allowed to drop. As a result, when we opened a water valve in the house, we got very dirty (rusty brown) water and/or high air pressure/sputters from the valves. Before long, the gas water heaters were rumbling so I turned them off. I also turned off the hot water circulation pump.
When the water issue was resolved, I flushed the water lines in the house until all water pressure and color was normal and then re-lit the pilot light and turned the thermostat to a normal warm setting and turned the circulation pump back on. The burners appeared to be functioning properly. However, now the thermostats now seem not to be working properly.
After the heaters had been on all night, we had no hot water. I went upstairs in the morning and adjusted the thermostats down to "vacation" and then back up to "warm" and when I did so, the burners came on, but they did not stay on long enough to heat the water. That night I came home expecting the water to be cold, but it was hot. I assumed the problem was resolved until I awoke the next day to only lukewarm water coming out of the hot water valve.
Could this problem be caused by sediment or blockage in the tanks? The heaters are only 4-5 years old... Could something have thrown the thermostats off?
Any insight you could offer would be greatly appreciated!
