Everyone,

This is my first post, however, I've been reading and learning tonnes from this forum for some time.

I'm hoping you can help me with a simple vent question. I'd like to add a wash basin in my basement. I have easy access to all the water lines, however, I only have my main 3" stack to tie the basin's drain and vent to.

My basin will be about 8 feet from the main stack.

Can you have a look at the crude diagram, I've attached and let me know if what I'm proposing is possible? Or suggest alternatives / simple solutions.

Thanks,
Greg

If that line you identify as main stack is the waste pipe from upper floors, you cannot tie a vent into it there. Your alternatives are to run a new vent pipe up through the walls, or to use an Air Admittance Valve. Most plumbers are not crazy about AAV becase as a mechanical device with moving rubber parts, they are subject to failure, with unpleasant consequences. Nonetheless, if allowed by your local code, it is an alternative.

vent

jimbo is right, you can't re-vent into a soil stack, a vent must tie into the soil stack 6in. above the highest fixture connected. AAV valves I would not use unless I had no options, [the are not real vents, prone to problems] if you can get a vent up to the attic space thats the way I would go. Sorry for the negative. Lots of luck.

Thanks guys. I had a suspicion that yours was the right answer. I'm going to stay away from any AAV, and figure out some way to tie into a vent somewhere.

Appreciate your help.
