13" Rough In....UGH!!

Okay-here's the dilemna...

Some 33+ years ago, the owners prior to the prior owners (keeping up with me) put in a 1/2 bath next to the den in what was part of the garage (2 car garage became a 1 1/2 car garage-now to find a 1/2 car-but I digress).

Besides putting in an odd marble slab of 1/2" as a riser to hold the toilet, it has a 13" rough-in. Using a 12" rough-in toilet leaves a big gap behind the tank (was going to use Toto Elongated Ultramax with CEFIONTECT).

A 14" rough-in won't work because the toilet will end up through the wall...

I could add 2 layers of 1/2" greenboard but then the Porcher vanity we love would be sticking into the entryway...

Did I mention the room is 4' x 5' with the entrance on one of the 4' walls and the vanity and toilet on the 5' wall??

Any ideas? Thoughts? Should we build out the wall just behind the toilet???

Put in a 12" toilet and don't worry about it...measure carefully, if it is maybe 13.25" or so, a 14" toilet might just fit; depends on the brand and model.

We are sticking with Toto. Unfortunately the elongated Ultramax with CEFIONTECT is going back for the round one without the CEFIONTECT

Would it be worth installing a 1" offset flange to move the toilet back 1"???

How would it work with a Toto with G-Max?

Most plumbers don't like offset flanges, but the direction you are moving things would seem to be along the lines of the existing water path, i.e., it won't have to try to make an extra corner. Not sure if it is worth the problems. If you were going to go to the trouble to put in the offset flange, I'd try to cut off the pipe and put in a new flange at 12", then you have more choices for toilets.

Put in the 12" . DO NOT put in an offset flange ,,,,,,,, NOTHING BUT TROUBLE will follow that choice .

If the space between the tank and wall bothers the eyes ,,,,, put a nice little shelf up to black that view .

Good idea regarding the shelf.

Is there any danger in not having the tank near the wall?

A 13" rough in is not a ARG. Many plumgers, myself included, intentionally put the opening at that point. That eliminates the possibility of the homeowner installing a thich tile and then the 12" toilet will not fit.

Unfortunately some 33+ years ago they did it that way but only put up wallpaper!

I vote for shelf. Not worth the effort to close the gap.
How about a chair rail or plate rail?

Chair rail may be a little low-and may compete with the vanity.

We are going with the Toto round Ultramax instead of the Elongated with CEFIONTECT (upset about losing the CEFIONTECT-but then again-this is not a toilet to be used as often as the one upstairs with the CEFIONTECT...).

We will live with the gap and maybe plate rail is the way to go....

The only one who will notice that gap is you, and after the first day or two, you'll forget about it. Most toilets I have seen have an inch or so in back, and it doesn't hurt a thing.
