Hi there--

We're in the layout phase of designing a bathroom to be installed on the 3rd floor of a 90 year old house. We're trying to figure out our options for where the toilet can go and still connect to a new waste line that we'd like to have run down the inside of a closet on the 2nd floor.

Our joist space is 10" from the underside of the existing floor to the top of the ceiling below. The floor itself is 7/8" thick. We know that we need to allow 1/4" fall per 1' of distance but don't know how many inches get used up by the connection between the flange and the closet bend. Can anyone give us an idea of how much space we'll have left between the bottom of the closet bend and the topside of the ceiling below?

Also, the house has two other toilets but they're on a separate waste line. Is there any reason that we should put this new toilet on a 4" waste line rather than a 3"?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Jude
