Plumbing Installation through floors for sewer pipes

What is allowable for sutting into top plates of walls as well as ploor joists when installing sewer pipes? I know that a typical rule is only 50% of a stud may be removed, but with a 3 or 4 inch pipe, it will always cut out more than 50% of the wall.
