I apologize in advance for the lenght of this post. Being new to this forum, I did a search but couldn't find any relevant threads. I have a 3/4" stop valve leaking from the bonnet. One drip every 10-15 seconds. It was a faster leak, but about 4 weeks ago I tightened the bonnet about as much as I dare, but returned slowly a couple of days ago. Because of its location, butted up right next to a fittting on either side, replacing it would mean cutting out past 2 tees and a street ell on one side and a tee on the other. Everything is shoehorned in here real tight. While I can do all this if I have to, is there a good way to attempt a repair on this valve?
This still sounds like the packing nut, but regardless, I would suggest a change of valves is in order. I understand money is tight for you, but this is the best way to go. I'd suggest a full flow ball valve.
Without seeing your valve, the first thing I would do is shut the water off and relieve the pressure. Find the hex or flat sides where the valve separates and if a washer there has gone bad, peal it off and wind four or five rounds of Teflon tape around the threads and put the valve back together..........
Be darned if the packing was bad or a gasket went bad would I replace a valve.
you can buy some string packing at home depot. shut off the valve, remove the handle and packing not, install the packing and replace the nut and handle. When you tighten the packing nut the leak should stop.
