 :p  hello

Suggestions. I have numerous American Standard shower fixtures. The diverter is a metal to metal. The replacement of the diverter stem with new, is limited in preventing bypass flow to the tub due to wear and tear on the seat. I do not believe that this is a removable seat fitting, but not positive. If not, is a tool available to rework seat area? Or a suggestion on an improvision to this situation. The stem portion that makes contact to the inner seat is beveled unlike the hot cold shut off . I do not know if the seat is concave to conform to the stem or if it originally was flat so I could use a standard seat grinding tool. I have 8 of these and other then this problem the hardware is sound and would be a nightmare to replace. Any clever tricks to grind this seat are welcome.

Thanks rob

Is there a barrel shaped brass seat that twists off the stem? If so the real seat is inside the barrel.

You could put a 3/4" fitting brush on a drill motor and try to clean up inside the faucet casting that the barrel seats against and then replace that barrel.

You need to make sure that you tighten the bonnet assembly real tight when putting it back together.

I have not seen a metal to metal AS diverter, but I have seen many that have a metal piece stuck in the body that require a great deal of time and ingenuity to remove so you can get to the real seat and rubber washer.

H J, don't you remember that Am. Std. and Kohler used , we called them barrels, on their top line faucets from at least the 1930s through maybe the 1960s?

The seats were inside of the barrels, but the whole stem assembly with the back side of the beveled barrel had to seat on a concave seating area inside the faucet casting.

Boy there were a ton of both of those brands used in my area here in southeastern Michigan.

"The seats were inside of the barrels, but the whole stem assembly with the back side of the beveled barrel had to seat on a concave seating area inside the faucet casting"

water supply is not a problem

Yes, on hot and cold supply. The diverter is a different animal. Its in the middle. It is a metal stem to metal seat, but does not have the removable barrel feature. I need to either figure out a way to grind this seating area smooth again or replace tub spout with diverter type and discontinue the original

I'm trying to remember, but I believe that the diverter stem had a bib washer and a bib screw on the end and when you backed it out to divert to the shower position, it was a metal to metal seating surface which could be smoothed with an emery cloth. And the end with the bib washer kept the water from rising up to the shower head.

By the way, the newer barrels have an o-ring, set in the outer beveled
seating area .

Are you sure there is no rubber washer on the end of the diverter stem that the brass screw that held the washer, could have broken off from?

See if you can find an old plumbing shop where the have an Am.Std parts book.
