is there suppose to be space between the tank and wall? My old toilet was against the wall, the new drake is about an inch away from the wall.

If you like to lean back and relax while you're sitting there reading, you might feel more comfortable if you had something between the tank and the wall to prevent the pressure on the tank from making it lean or wobble. Maybe a doubled-over piece of carpet or something, or a padded piece of wood. I've got about 1 1/4" behind my Drake, but adopt more of a Rodin-like posture.

I feel the same way. I've seen toilets with the tank assembly recessed into a niche. Saves space, but makes servicing real tough.

I rebuilt a toilet for a steady customer whos toilet was installed and the previous owner built a counter over the tank with enough room for a small forearm to fit between the counter bottom and tank without its lid on. It took over an hour to replace the flapper, fill valve, and new handle.
