I have a Crane toilet and it is driving me crazy. When I flush it the water comes in swirls around and does not flush. It does not overflow but you have to flush several times for it to actually flush. If it were blocked the water would back up but it doest't. The tank is filled up to the fill line but the toilet does not flush. It always takes several flushes for it to actually complete flush. I have plunged to no avail. Any suggestions?

Flush the toilet with the lid off to see if all the water is actually leaving the tank. If it isn't, you need to adjust the flapper so it empties better.

Yes, all the water leaves the tank--you can even hold the lever until the tank is empty but that still does not ensure that the toilet flushes.

Can the fill line be raised without the water overflowing down the flush valve overflow tube? If so, you should be able to adjust the fill valve so there's more water in the tank. Other than that, I'm stumped.

Londonplace, has this toilet always had this problem, or is it something that developed? When I bought my newly built condo in 1986, it came with two Crane Galaxy toilets (which I believe was contractor grade). The one upstairs did exactly as you describe. The plumbing company who did the work later admitted that there were a few of these toilets with bad castings which caused the problem. If you have always had this problem, maybe this is the reason.

I'd also like to know how long this has been going on. If it's always been this way, it might well be a defective toilet. You can check that easily enough by pulling the toilet and placing it on a bucket (you may need help to balance the toilet on the bucket). Fill the tank with water, and see if it flushes. If it does, the toilet is OK.

I think it's worth buying a new wax ring the next time you're in a wax-ring store in any event, because the odds are you're going to be pulling this toilet. I'd pull it anyway just for the thrill of discovery. Could be a weird clog hanging up until enough pressure develops to move it (temporarily) out of the way, could be a severe venting problem.
