View Full Version : Code v. reality: 1.5" drain

I have an existing 1.5" drain for a sink. I want to add a Fisher & Paykel dish drawer (pair) to that line.

My contactor (I've worked with him for more than 10 years and I have a lot of respect for him) says that a 1.5" drain is plenty and that code is total overkill.

I want to make sure before I install the dishwasher.

Any thoughts?

What code requires more than 1.5"?

Find out what code is. Ask your town inspector. A lot of things not to code will 'work'. But it may come back to bite you if you sell or have an accident that you have to file an insurance claim for.

Also, how's he planning to vent?

by the UPC the kitchen sink drain needs to be 2" (2x11/2x11/2 san tee)whether you have a dishwasher or not. You shouldn't have any problems with 11/2 drain, as long as it is open (no partial clog), a disposer might cause problems though

Studer vent. It's legal where I live.

Why would a disposer cause a problem?

Why would a disposer cause a problem?

With a disposer you will be running a lot more solid waste through the line and 11/2 " over time will be a clog issue. Just from personal experience I notice that 11/2 with a disposer is a bad combination.

A disposer and a 1" 1/2" waste line are absolutly OK . It would be nice to have 2" but it is not needed .

People need to scrape what they can into the trash, NOT use the disposer as a sewage grinder.

how far is the stack?

You've already got two strikes against you if you use the 1.5" diameter pipe and the Studor AAV vent. So, ToolsrMe, you probably want to know that the length of pipe is also a factor in draining. If the stack is in the wall that the kitchen vanity hangs off of, you have a short distance. That's only a ball and not a third strike.:)
