Problems with Dug Well

My fiance and I are building a new house. And because many of the houses around us have spring fed dug wells we decided to try a dug well. We are still doing construction on the interior of the house and have been using the well for about a month. Up until a couple days ago we had plenty of water. It was pumped dry 3 times and recoverd quickly. We also watered the lawn with a sprinkler for about 3 1/2 hours then proceeded to water it for another hour with a hose. About 3 days ago the water line went below the pump and has not risen in the 3 days. Our excavator said it could be that the water table is lower now then when we dug it. But we had heavy rain for about 4 hours yesturday morning and it still didn't go up. What could be causing the sudden lack of water?

Water tables don't instantly recover, it takes days/weeks/months or where I live, years.

It could be your well digger happened to dig into a water pocket, and when you pumped it dry it doesn't refresh from the adjoining area.
