Pressure problem in shower

I purchased a 35-year old house one month ago. A couple of days ago, one of the showers developed a problem: Sometimes, the hot water pressure in the shower is barely more than a trickle.

Two nights ago, I went in to take a shower and the hot water pressure was very low. After a couple of minutes, the pressure immediately went back to the normal level and stayed there. The same thing happened last night, but it took a little longer for the pressure to come back up. This morning, my wife took a shower and the pressure stayed low.

The shower has separate hot and cold water valves.

None of the other taps were on and I don't see any obvious signs of a leak. There is no problem with the cold water pressure in the shower. The hot and cold water pressure at all of the other faucets in the house is great.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this and how I can fix it?

To expand on P-1's answer, you probably have some sort of blockage, some minerals, small stones, or piece of rubber, that for some reason seems to block and then unblock the flow of hot water. Most likely place for this is in the hot water side of your shower valve. If you take it apart, you'll probably find the offending material. Don't forget to turn off the water to the shower before taking the valve apart.

I just love my shower head!

I live in Maine and have a well. My water pressure has always been bad. My wife and my children have always complained that they can not rinse the soap off their skin or the shampoo out of their hair. I think that I bought and tried every shower head that I could ever find in every home center and hardware store in New England. They were all junk!!! Finally I found the solution at a small home show in Portland. A company was there that specializes in shower heads for low water pressure. Their name was Water Management in Boston, MA, and their website address is TAKEASHOWER.COM. They sold me a shower head that worked so well with my low water pressure that it almost felt like we had drilled another well. IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Unlike all the other shower heads we bought this one actually worked. If you are suffering from low water pressure you MUST visit this website. I only wish that I had found this company 10 years ago when I first moved to Maine because I would have eliminated a decade of suffering in the shower for me, my wife and my family.
