I've only removed one in my house, so take that into account. Once you expose the edges, you'll usually find nailing flanges where the thing was nailed to the wall. Remove the nails, shut off and disconnect the water. remove the drain cover and check. Often, the drain is not glued, it may have a clamp, or just be a pressure fit.
If you can't get to the water easily, you may be able to cut around it with either a jig saw or a sawsall. Just be careful you don't cut into the pipes or any wiring!
Rather than trying to remove the thing in whole, they cut fairly easily with the right blade on a jigsaw or a sawsall. Take it out in pieces.
You'll have to replace/repair some drywall, and probably will want to replace the shower control valve and maybe the riser to the showerhead.
