Basically this is pretty good advice. I disagree about the duct tape, WD40, and propping thing up even if it was stated tongue in cheek, there's too much of that kind of DIY repairs being done. I'd summerize this 3 pages to this.
Know what you can do and what you can't do, and if you've never done it, you'd better get a pro or at least get professional advice before tearing into it. Know that not all advice from the Box Stores is bad or wrong, but it's not always right either. Know that most "repairs in a tube, can, box, roll, or botttle" aren't worth the effort. Have the list of pros that can be called when needed. Do periodic checking to catch problems while they're still small. When something needs repairing/replacing, do it right the first time.

some ideas are great on that list...
the one thing that theya re right about is that most people
usually make decisions when their is an emergency and go to the
biggest adds in the Yellow Pages and get ripped off big time.....

experience .......

One thing that will totally INFURIATE ME is when you are about to
walk out of someones house for your next call in 30 minutes , you have
even made out the bill , and they come up with a list of things that they
want you to look at while you are there.... or they forgot that this or
that was also needing repairs....
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT DONE AND HAVE
THE LIST READY....
read the list to them ---ON THE PHONE--- before they come out
so they can schedule their day out properly....

Maintaince contracts are a complete rip off and are for fools only...
they areusually sold to customers by the --- rip off artists

buying your own parts is not too wise becasue you dont know what is
JUNK and what is quality.....and if your part fails, they wont warranty it..
let the plumber put in what he KNOWS will stand the test of time

I think that's a pretty good article. I look at every repair as if I can do it myself. Given time, I will research it, ask alot of questions (that's how I ended up here BTW) and then try to tackle it. Of course I know my limitations, too. And my time is GOLDEN.
Recently I had a pipe leak just below the slab, that was discovered on a Wednesday. I worked on it until late Wed nite when I got home from work. I ended up calling a plumber. Had this happened on a Saturday, and I had 2 complete days to mess with it, I would not have called anyone.
