Thought I'd share this product with all y'all. They're called RockSplicers. Allows you to bend in the butt end of drywall so you have a recess to fill and not have to taper as much. Genius!

There are 20 in a box so it must be something that stays in place, and since the buttjoint would be over a stud or joist, I don't see how it would fit in to make a smoother joint.

Yes, it stays in place. With this dodad, you don't put the butt joint over a joist/stud. That way you have room for it... U shape pulls the ends in slightly.
