We are in the process of renovating two rental apartments and are looking for a solution for a shower that is easy to clean and will not require much maintenance. We have looked at the pre-made shower surrounds and have not fallen in love with them. We would like to do a custom shower without tile! Is there a product that will produce a smooth and sturdy finish?? Suggestions??

Cultured mable is a good product.
It's nice for remodel, in that the panels can be poured to measure.
That way, you can replace the wall board behind, and glue the new panels over the new work.
That way you can skip the drywall repair and painting.

Cost wise - how expensive is cultured marble? I called Re-Bath for their acrylic tub surrounds and it seemed to be $1000 for each wall of an alcove set tub. We are considering formica laminate.

I lived in a rental apartment that had a Formica laminate shower surround.

Worked well--easy to clean too.

The only potential problem was that they couldn't find a single sheet big enough to cover all three walls without a seam. So there was one seam--but both corners were continuous (i.e. the formica was bent with heat to fit).

Hope this helps,
.../j

Have you looked at the Kohler Sterling tub/shower 3 peice interlocking surrounds? You would have to install a new tub also as they work with their tubs only.

Terry mentioned cultured marble - good choice. We had our bath redone a year ago. I removed all the old shower enclosure tile and we had a local company install the marble. It's very easy to keep clean, it gets squeegee-ed (sp??) after every use and we rarely use any chemical cleanser on it. In the Atlanta area, we paid around $18/sq.ft. installed. Best money I've ever spent!

Some of the bigger bath design places have cultured marble kits in some standard sizes. These would likely be less than one made custom-sized, if it meets your requirements.
