Repiping

Hi Folks,

I am having a new water main installed and would like to know which option you recommend. House is a 1974 Colonial (3,000 sq. ft including basement) with 2 1/2 average sized bathrooms. So, in total, 3 - 1.6 gpf toilets, 3 sinks, 2 standard tub/shower units1 - basement utility sink, 1 clothes washer, 1 dish washer, 1 kitchen sink

1. Least disruptive: Have new 3/4" L copper main pulled through the original 1" polyethylene main and connect to the 3/4" interior meter

2. "Mole" a new 3" hole through the basement wall and yard and have 1" K copper inserted with 20 additional feet of copper pipe to allow for rerouting along the ceiling joist bays before connecting to the 3/4" meter.

Distance from the city street water supply to the inside meter is approximately 50 feet.

If price is not a factor, is one way far superior to the other in terms of function? Is 1" K copper the way to go versus the 3/4" L copper? Current water pressure is perfectly adequate/good, but not great.

K copper is the besst way to go

but I have never seen anyone actually pull the copper through

the old plastic pipeing......

I suppose its possible??

Agree with MPM go with the 1" K copper.

Go with the 1" type K. You will have more volume even though it comes through the 3/4" meter. Pressure will not change regardless of pipe size or kind. Type L is not really HD enough for a buried main, and 3/4" is marginal. You will be happier in the long run with the 1" K copper.

I'm a little bitter with myself...

The new main has been installed - 1" K copper to the house, but...

My issue now is that I failed to specify 1" K copper all the way to the interior meter. The 1" line penetrates the block wall and is immediately reduced to 3/4" M copper for about 25 feet to the meter. I regret that I didn't clarify this!!!:mad: I would have at least preferred L-grade on the interior.:mad:

Last year, we finished replacing all the original M copper, and now I have new M copper. :mad:

You can always replace it with 1"K

You can change to 1" easily enough since the pipe is inside now. I wouldn't work about using type L, it is a tad heavier, but type M will work for you just fine. That's what most interior plumbing is.
