I have a bath tub with tile 2' of the way up the wall and a high gloss paint that feels like an oil base above the tile.
will I be fine with using a shower curtain and recaulking all seams w/o tiling the rest of the way up? or is there a simple surround that i can install with the tile in place quickly?

I recently purchased this fixer-upper and have put well over 300 man hours into getting it liveable. I love to be able to move in and am close. Our climate is very dry, so i am thinking I can get by with just repainting the walls and caulking well. Any ideas are appreciated.

If it has been that way for a long time you should be fine as long as the paints integrity remains good and the seams + corners are caulked well. The worst that can happen is you will have to remedy a bad situation should 1 arise.

Try drying it out quickly after each use. A squeege may help.
