Thank you for this great site, I learned a bit before registering :)

I am pretty reasonable when it comes to plumbing, except.....except with flared fittings.

Never gotten close to them, but I think I will be this weekend.

My mom's house has galv piping thruout, and when the feeders branch off to faucets, they are 1/2" flared fittings with 1/4" copper tubing.

I really prefer to work with fip and mip, just a lot easier.

I am anticipating taking this one krappy flared fitting/tubing assembly off and want to change it out to 1/2" iron or brass. The tubing - not bent - has developed a teeny pinhole...

Is there a female flared fitting to 1/2" male iron or brass? Have scoured my rural hardware stores and the guys all look at me like I am on drugs LOL

Also: will I teflon tape the threads (assumably if there is a female flare to iron). I do for all other metal thread-to-metal thread connections.

Much thanks again and am holding breath til your answer arrives :):)

flared

You will have to remove the flared fitting from the steel pipe and then transition to the new fittings. You will not find flare to "anything" fittings at any common hardware or big box store.

well I wanted to come back and share, in case someone future needed to find out. :)

Starting at the bottom, going up to sink, this is what I did.

took off old copper tubing supply line (was female 1/2" flare swivel on each end)

put on a double 1/2" female flare swivel union*,
teflon tape, then tighten over the existing 1/2" flare male.

on the top female swivel installed a 1/2" flare male TO 1/2" iron (A Watts/Anderson Burrows fitting), **

on top of 1/2" male iron I installed a working 1/2" ball valve ***
(didn't have a valve at this location at all in mom's old house)

on top of ball valve inserted a 1/2" double iron nipple****

then a 9" 1/2" iron each end supply line.

Turned water back on, and perfecto!

(I teflon tape every metal-to-metal fitting above)

Thanks for being here, and I am confident I'll need to come back some tiime :)
