Hi there,

I just put in new tiles in my bathroom and the plumber has to come in to sweat new 1/4 turn valves and install the fixtures. When he sweats these fittings on, is there anything I can put on the tiles so he doesn't 'burn' them? I trust him but stuff happens you know? Can I use aluminum foil around the fittings so he doesn't torch the tiles?

Thank you!

Andrew

fire retardent cloth...

They do sell fire retardent cloths (non asbestos) that you could place over the tiles. I believe this will keep it from charring, but the tiles will still get hot.

It's likely that sweating those valves won't put much heat near the tiles anyway. Hopefully one of the pros can confirm this.

There are heat sheilds that can be used but just tell him thet he is responsible for any damage, at all. Tell him that it would make you feel better if he used one if you are concerned. A good plumber will know his limitations and abilities.

hmmm
ok, he's a journeyman plumber and he does do good work. We'll have to see what comes about. Thank you all!

Sheet metal makes a good, cheap shield. You don't need much. I wouldn't leave it to chance. Definitely cover.
