noisy hot water heater

After showering or dishes my hot water heater sounds like a rocket ship. It sounds like its going to blow up. Does anyone know what could be the cause of this. Its reall scary and annoying. Thanks

how old is the water heater?????

if it is more than 10 years old, I suggest you think about
just changeing it out....

you can flush it out from the bottom to rid yourself of some of the'

sediment, but it all depends on the age.

A few questions:

How old is the water heater?
Is it gas or electric?
Did the noise start suddenly, or has it built up gradually?

If you Google {"water heater" noisy} you'll find a bunch of helpful advice; most of it points to scale buildup, with added complications for gas-fired heaters. General approach to fixing it is drain, clean, replace parts as needed. As Mark said, if it's an older unit, you may as well bite the bullet and replace it.

if it's an electric heater, the elements probably have crap on them, calcium etc. you need to have the elements changed out.
