hello all-

contractor installed a new shower pan and shower doors for me recently. The pan gathers water in one corner. He say that the pan is cemented in. He states that the pan is off because of my support joist below. Also, I think this has caused my shower doors to not close properly. One of the bypass doors does not close right as is wants to drift towards the corner where the water gathers. Can anyone offer comments. Is there a way to fix the doors so they close properly ? Thanks

The pan should be installed so it is plumb...if required, you would either make the subflooring level, or add enough thinset or deck mud to embed the pan so it is level. Not having it level compromises everything - the doors, the standing water, etc. It will be very difficult to fix this now...it should have been taken care of during installation.

Thank you. He is telling me that it is not a big deal. Says he, " it is just some standing water." If he can get the doors to close properly, would it be OK (minus the standing water)

He states that it was my underlying support joist. This was not a problem with the original pan so Im thinking he did something wrong.

The instructions for any pan say that it must be installed level. There are several methods to perform that task, but it is never 'okay' to install one where it is not level - regardless of the floor's conditions.

It is the plumbers' responsibility to ensure proper drainage. You can't install a bathtub on a 45 degree inclined floor, if you follow me. In this specific case, there is no difference between a 45 degree inclined floor, and a floor out of level to the point where water doesn't drain properly.

The point is that he installed a pan that doesn't drain properly. He was negligent in either fixing the underlying problem, or bringing it to your attention so that you could arrange for the underlying problem to be fixed, and so that he could install a properly levelled pan.

If you haven't paid him his entire invoice, don't give him any more money until it's fixed. If you have paid him all his money, then the best you can hope for is that he will tweak your shower doors so they (hopefully) close properly.

Thank you. I agree with you. He is hopefully coming soon to work on the doors. He is (in a nice way) trying to tell me that it is my fault for one reason or another. My point is water did not pull in one spot previously. The doors worked fine too.
