My 4" clean-out pipe is disconnected and tilted and dirt is getting washed into the sewer. I want to dig it out and reconnect it but how does it connect to the sewer line? Is there a gasket or a fitting to connect it? It is a metal pipe.
Thanks

It is probably leaded into a bell joint, or is connected with a rubber connector and stainless steel clamps. You probably can't tell until you dig it up down to the joint.
You may find it broken, or just a loose or disconnected joint.

it seems to disconneted from a deteriorated rubber or plastic connector. Would that make sense?

can I get the connector at a home inprovement store? Should I consider changing over to PVC or not bother?
Thanks
Until you know what kind of pipe the riser is, what kind the horizontal one is, and what was used to connect the two, you have no idea how to fix it. Find that out and then the repair should be almost intuitive.
