pump problem

im having problems with my submersible pump
it is brand new and the second one ive tried
when hooked up it will only pump for about 5 seconds then
it stops .it will kick on every 30 -45 seconds but wont stay on longer than a few seconds

Check and make sure your voltages between the system and pump is correct.

Am I correct in assuming you are installing the pump?

Where did you buy this pump, and is this the second pump within a day or so or the second pump in a year or so?

Do you know where the water is in the well and is the pump down in the water quite a way?

this is the second pump in a matter of weeks
the water table is at about 50'
the pump is down about 200

I will again assume you are doing the work.

Did you change the wire?

How much water can you run before the pump quits?

The fact that the water is at 50 feet and the pump is at 200 feet indicates a low producing well. If you use too much water at any given time, you can over pump the well which will result in no water for a period of time. And at that same time you are doing damage to the pump and motor.

If this is not the case, you must be doing something wrong in the installation. Maybe a bad wire splice, nicked wire or several other things.

It sounds like a thremal overload shutting off the pump.

Is it a 2 or 3 wire pump, or do you have a control box or not?

What hp and gpm pump is it?

What voltage is the pump and what is the power you are using? 115 or 230?

Why did you have to repace it the first time and how old was the other pump?

It is possible that the pump wet end and motor are not matched.

It is also possible that with the water at 50 ft down in the well that the pump is overloading due to too little resisting head. Most pumps are designed to be non-overloading. That means that they are supposed to be able to pump against zero resistance without overloading the motor.

Do you know the make and model number of the pump? Do you have the pressure/flow characteristic of the pump?

If you can get a clamp-on ammeter, try to measure the current in the wires when it starts up.

What size is the wire and is it submersible pump cable?

1/2hp motors come in either 115 or 230 volts. Could you have bought the wrong motor? All pumps bigger than 1/2hp are 230 volts only. Do you know what voltage you are sending to the motor? Do you know what voltage pump motor you bought?
