Hi,

I installed a new sink in a vanity and the bowl is lower than the original. The drain is located in the wall. If I try to use a standard P trap it will not connect since the sink drain is too low. I tried to use an extension piece but I do not feel comfortable with the connection. It is plastic pipe and it connects using a plastic ring and treaded connection. I am concerned that it will eventually work it's way out. I have looked for other options but cannot find anything that would work better. Do you have any suggetions? (Other than removing drywall and lowering the drain.)

Thanks

Are you setting the P-trap as high as you possibly can on the pop-up assembly? You should be able to take it almost up to the pop-up rod. Sometimes tightening the nut the same time you are pushing up will allow for the trap to bottom out at its highest elevation.

Switching to 1.25" may give you some gains but not enough if it is a few inches off.

Thanks for the reply

I did push it up until it was flush with the popup assembly.

I am using a standard plastic p trap. If the elbow of the p trap was a "U" and not a "J" then it would work or if I reversed the elbow and put it on backwards it would work. Would I be better off building my own out of pvc fittings? I have looked at flexible connections but I think that looks bad.

I cannot see how making the "J" a "U" would help anything. You can install it backwards, but you have to make a very precise measurement because the tailpiece will only enter the recess a very short distance, unless you are using a 1 1/2" P trap with a 1 1/4" tailpiece.

That is my exact problem if I install it backwards. I don't feel confortable with such a small connection. I am using 1 1/2 p trap and 1 1/4 tail piece.

If the J were a U then I could extend the portion to the drain. I decided to not use the standard p-trap kit and instead put it together using separate PVC fittings. I think that is the only way I will feel confortable with the connections. I really don't like the slip joints.
