I purchased a claw foot tub for installation in a new house, currently under construction. I have been researching the older style faucets but cannot tell exactly which parts I will need to purchase. I would like to have the faucet set up independently of the tub--that is coming up from the floor--rather than having to drill holes in the actual tub. I haven't yet talked to the plumber who will be doing the plumbing in the whole house yet since we are not even under roof yet but I wanted to find out some of the basics before discussing it with him. I have tried searching for info but mostly just found lists of faucet and piping for sale with no explanation of how it all goes together. Any suggestions?

You could probably come up from the floor with 3/4" brass pipes for hot and cold which would be strong enough to support the faucet and would be consistent with the time frame when claw foot tubs were the style. If the pipes come down from the ceiling that would be consistent with having the water tank on the roof or in the attic before there were reliable pressure systems.
You could have the brass pipes gold plated if that fits with the decor. You might get a better idea from some old photos or catalogs.
You might want to go shopping in a salvage yard instead of "Posh Plumbing Inc".

Most faucets for those tubs come with the riser pipes, but you have to know where to install the openings in the floor to make them come out right, since many have a support bracket that either attaches to the wall or clamps to the drain's overflow pipe.

we have gotten into a few of those
a while back....
It really depends on how perfect you want
everything to look and how the tub is going to be located....
if the tub is going to be literally out in the
middle of everything, with the back side of
the faucet and lll the plumbing exposed for the
workd to see -----then the pipes going up to
the faucet willl have to look straight, and generally neat...
we have used flexible braided supplies to a few that were installed
witht the faucet up against a wall that worked very well....
dont worry too much about it.....
just put the thing in where you want it and let the
plumber worry about it

I only paid $200 for the tub! hope I don't have to put out that much for the faucet
Thanks for the help--I will let my plumber figure out the details--I just try to learn as much of the basics as I can before the subcontractors come in. That way I am not quite as "dense" when they start talking about what they will do.
I like the salvage yard idea for research but think I prefer new, energy efficient, faucets.
I only paid $200 for the tub! hope I don't have to put out that much for the faucet

Faucets are neither energy efficient nor inefficient. It makes absolutely no difference on a tub. If you want to minimize flow in a shower, you can use a restricted shower head. If you want to minimize flow in a sink you can put a restrictor behind the aereator. Many water suppliers pass out restrictors for free.

to make the dreams of some designer work out
I really like when an EXPENSIVE pedistle lavatory and
EXPENSIVE faucet are bought and the plumber
is somehow expected to install them like they show in
the fancy catelogue -----
without any drain or water supply lines visible...like in the pretty picture.
they are always pissed off when you spoil their dreams......
and tell them it cant be done.......
as far as that claw fot tub goes, you can get
an inexpensive washerless tub faucet with the shwer attachemt
for around 145.00 the drain about another 30 all in chrome...
at any plumbing supply house
