ice maker water line

Our water line to our ice maker broke and flooded our basement. It is not copper it is that poly.....stuff. Is it common for this to break like this? It broke straight through, not just a leak. It must have been running for hours. I need information and opinions. Does this happen often? I need to know how often these types of breaks occur? My stuff was destroyed and my insurance company is giving me a hard time. Do these breaks occur often??

There seems to be two problems with many ice maker supply lines. Plastic lines and saddle valves. I suggest you replace the line with copper and the saddle valve with a tee and ball valve. If you aren't sure about what valve you have, a saddle valve is the one that you clamp onto the supply line and screw a needle that pierces the supply line. It's the common way DIY kits connect, but are very prone to eventually leak. The cure is to cut the supply line, solder in a tee, valve, and adapter to small copper tubing.
