At Home Depot they have various of the Bernzomatic kits ranging from $20-50+ and up. I am mostly doing PEX so I only need copper for shower valves and tub connections or the occasion where something ends up "exposed" like coming up through the floor into an island sink or for a laundry on a concrete wall, etc. Am I OK with the least expensive $20 kit, if not what model should I get for good results. I generally prefer to get good tools but since I am not going to do much I also don't want to over-buy. What's the best kit recommended by Bernzomatic or other brands (I can buy from a supply house) for my purposes?

I guess the choices are TS1500, TS3000, TS4000, TS8000.

The one I have is all brass, I'm not sure why everything must be covered in plastic these days.

Anyhow, propane will be fine for 1/2" and 3/4", you don't need anything fancy.

Many, many years ago I bought a Bernzomatic kit that had a basic screw-on brass torch, included various nozzle attachments, and had an external striker. All the parts, including the standard profile gas bottle, fit inside a blow-molded plastic case. It has served me well, still works as well as the day I bought it, and I still keep it as a back-up. That said, there are advantages to the newer-generation of torches:

1. Push-button start -- This is a HUGE advantage over having to use a manual striker. Saves time, saves frustration, and much safer because you will not be tempted to leave the flame running during set-ups.

2. Hotter flame -- The new torches have improved designs that mix the fuel & air more thoroughly for a hotter flame.

I don't know about the least-expensive models, but make sure your torch has at least these two features. My personal recommendation is the "Trigger-Start Hose Torch Kit" (Model #330278), but at $65, it is also one of the most expensive choices. When I finally decided to upgrade my torch, this is the model I bought. The reason I chose this model is that the hose allows much easier working in cramped spaces, as well as in akward positions. Also less fatigue because you are only holding the weight of the torch head, and not the fuel bottle.
