We are in a new home in West Texas. We've experienced a hard freeze the last two nights (ten degrees each). We have no hot water at sink faucets. Yesterday, we had hot water again at noon.

Why would it be the hot water side freezing? The pex system is in the attic with insulation blown in. I am surprised that at least part of it is freezing.

Of course, with many comments on this forum, I've got questions about PEX now but I'm stuck or should I say "frozen?"

Thanks!
Paul

Even though it is insulated (how much insulation is there), some where there is not enough and if it is a spot where wind is blowing in, even through a crack, this could be enough to freeze it. Once you stop using the HW it cools and can freeze just as easy as the cold side. 10 F is very cold.

Thanks. I checked. The pipes are all wrapped up to the hot water tank. There is a stretch of about 20 feet where the wrapped pipe goes over the back porch and there is no extra insulation there. My guess is that is where the tubing froze. I think I'll add some batts over and under that run of tubing and maybe we'll have no repeat freezes.

Your best bet would be to leave the HW faucet on so it runs slowly. It should be enough to keep it from freezing until the weather warms up or just do it at night when the temps are low enough to freeze it.
