I am wondering what is the average cost per sqft to tile a bathroom wall? I'm getting quoted $36 per sqft. Seems a little steep.

I live in San Diego.

For the most part tile is fairly inexpensive as a material
$1.5 to $4 a square foot. THe cost is in the perperation and labor.
Need to put in a underlayment, I like 1/2 cement boad, then you need to set the tile, which is labor intensive,
Grout the tile, and seal it...

Key point is that tile is labor intensive...
I've done a number of rentals were it is a basic in and out job, my rule of thumb is $2000 including time and materials...
But these are quick in and out jobs.

The materials cost can be quite high, or in the noise. You can find tile (materials only) that is much less than $1/sqft, and some that is over $200. So, it depends somewhat on what you want. Then, it depends on what's already on the wall, and what needs to be done to prep it for tile. A wall that is wavey or out of plumb could be a problem. Then, your local labor rate plays a huge factor. Is it a complex design, or a simple, single color, or is it natural stone? Is there adequate parking for the contractor? How far does he have to carry materials? Are there time restrictions? As you can see, there are lots of factors that affect the price of a job.
