Good Well Pump

Hi All,

I moved into my current home, which was built in 1993-94 about three years ago. I am on a deep well, and the water is acidic.

All of my neighbors have already replaced their pumps so I am sure I am coming up on needing a replacement. Can anyone make

a recommendation on what make/model to buy? I know Gould used to be considered the best, but how about with acidic water?

I already read the comment about all currently made pumps being of poor quality, but there must be a preferred brand.

Goulds is as good as any. I wish I could tell you “this” is the best one to buy. 30-40 years ago that wouldn’t have been a problem. Over the years pumps have become so inbreed, crossbreed, hybridized, that they are basically all the same. Goulds has always had a good name. But now they no longer use Franklin motors. So the Centripro motors that Goulds makes hasn’t been out long enough to be proven reliable. The very same motor is marketed by Pentair under several other names including Pentek. So Goulds can’t say they are better than any of the Pentair brands like Sta-Rite, Meyers, Flotec, etc.. From just how they are constructed, I don’t see them being any better than others.

Franklin had a good name in motors. They bought Jacuzzi pumps, which they now sell under several names including J-Class, Shaffer, Franklin, etc. Even Franklin motors are about 1/3rd the length and weight of what they were years ago.

The preferred brand for an installer is the one he/she makes the most money from. Which does not necessarily mean it is the best. The preferred pump for a homeowner would be the one he/she can get at the best price. There is certainly not enough difference in pumps anymore to pay two or three times the price of any other.

Everybody shortened and added more plastic to their pumps. IMO all you can buy is a cheap pump, so just don’t pay too much.
