Hi Terry and all,

Can you clarify how to measure the rough-in? Is it the distance from the back wall to the floor bolts (easy to measure)? Or is it the distance from the back wall to the center of the bowl (impossible to measure since it's hard to tell exactly where the center of the bowl is ...?)

For older toilets was it more common to have a 14" rough-in since the tank was bigger?

Thanks,
Laura S.

I don't know what you mean by "center of the bowl", but the dimension is from the vertical wall to the center of the anchor bolts. 12" has ALWAYS been the standard dimension, (tanks were wider, not "thicker"), with 14" and 10" toilets for special conditions.

So ... the distance from the wall to the center of the anchor bolts is 13 3/8". Do you think a standard 12" rough-in will work? (That's what I ordered and now I'm scared that the tank won't have enough wall support behind it.)

Wall support is not need for the tank. What will happen with the center being 13 3/8" is the tank will set 1 3/8" farther away from the wall. If you can live with that you will be fine.

Tanks don't need to touch the wall.

In the 20's, there were some that were mounted on the wall, but that was like 90 years ago.

Plus, having some air space behind, if the tank sweats on a really hot, steamy day, means you won't promote mold or mildew growing back there! All modern toilets have space behind them that varies by brand and model when installed on a flange positioned properly. Yours is oversize for a standard 12", and undersize for a 14" rough-in (some might fit, some won't, but a 12" will work with anything 12" or greater).
