Well Casing

Bought this home 3 years ago. There is a well casing by our garden out back. It use to have a pump on it I'm told. Id like to put one on it. Not sure the depth and last year I lowered a subpump down the casing and pumped but reaally slow. Neighbor has a spare well pump he gave me. I dropped a hose down it and hooked to pump. Tried priming it but could get nothing. Now after taking I think I goofed up. Didn't know about foot valves or any thing. Would not having pipe and a foot valve stopped it from pumping?

There is a point somewhere between difficult and impossible to get a shallow well pump to pick up a prime. You fail to mention what the static water level is in the well.

Depending on the type of hose that you are using could be a problem.

Many hose types are not rated to be used in a vacuum, as a suction hose. They will collapse.

If the static water level is 20 feet, or less and the pump is primed then it should work. That is if you have no suction leaks.
