To shut off the water at our weekend place I usually close the valve at the meter or at the main cut-off into the house. I would like to install an electric valve between the meter and main cut-off so that guests (or my wife) can easily turn the water on and off if I'm not there. I know I can get a solenoid valve like those used in an irrigation system but would rather get something a little more sturdy. Any suggestions?

I havent seen one like this yet...
always considered doing something like this before
for some customers...with expensive homes and
no one there all the time to watch over things.
I know of one fellow that got himself some sort of
silenoid electric switch and tied it into wall switch
by the front door....in his home away from home..
all he has to do is to remember to
turn it off when he leaves
anyway, this appears to be a lot better,
but still its probably better to feel extra secure and
just shut it off manually.

Do you want a normally open switch or a normally closed switch?
Do you want the water to cone on with a power outage or shut off with an outage?
Is there a valve that would solve the power outage problem?
I assume that there would need to be some sort of manual bypass. I would guess that Cla-Valve my have something that would work. Just a guess.
You probably would be better off with a motorized valve so the unit does not have to be energized for the entire use period, regardless of whether it is noramlly open or closed. Operating it would require a double throw switch to activate the proper function.
