What water table level is safe?

I had a portion of my basement lowered by 1 ft, leaving a bench wall. Because of this I needed to add a sump pump for drainage around this lowered portion.

It appears that the "natural" water table is just slightly below the lowered area - I would guess only a few inches below the lowered basement slab. As a result the sump pump (as the float is currently set) is pumping every hour or so fighting against the water table.

My question is - is it safe to adjust the pump float to just below the lowered area (and hopefully stop the pump from cycling on an ongoing basis)? What is a safe water table level in this circumstance, given that the footings for the house are a foot higher (and seemingly well above the water table)

Thanks!
