I'm wondering what people use when going from cast to ABS, or copper to ABS.

I have my ticket, but in are town we are limited to what we can get locally. I find the clamps i have used even if specified CU x PL clamp, never go on straight. The OD of one pipe is always bigger

I always find the band starts crimping in the middle, or start sticking out one side more then the other

US codes require banded couplings (no-hub) when connecting above grade. These are specified by the type of material, and can have different diameter ID so that they fit. If you get the correct one, it won't collapse or crimp and, typically, has a stop in the middle so that it fits at the proper depth (assuming your pipe end is square). Not sure what is available in Canada, or their code requirements.

If you have old cast iron, it's OD will be 4-1/8", the same as copper.
New cast iron or no-hub is 4-3/8"
When going between old cast to ABS, I use a copper x no-hub mission coupling.

A standard no-hub coupling with old cast iron pipe. This should have been a copper sized mission coupling by new cast iron.

You can get these in many sizes to fit the OD of the pipe you're working with.
They even make copper to plastic,
XH cast to plastic and many others.
