Our pipes froze on the main part of the house. My husband looked under the crawl space and determined 2 or 3 pipes were cracked. We called a reputable plumbing company to come check it out for us. They determined that ALL the pipework to the main part of the house would need to be redone. They were at our house for a total of 1.5 hours yesterday and 1.5 hours today. The work is almost complete, they just just have to fix the piping that goes to the main shower, which I guess is a big issue. Anyway, the owner of the company called me at 745 am, said worse case scenario it would cost us $1,175 to do the work. He also said it would be around 8 hours of work. He said the plumbers would be at my house very shortly, early to mid morning. I stayed home and waited... they didn't get here until 12:35 pm and left by 2 pm. I'm afraid of getting charged for time that wasn't used on our plumbing. Does this seem right? Also, I am sure they're planning on coming by tomorrow to finish the job, but I have appointments during the day and can't afford to stay home another day.

It sounds like you need a different plumber!

As for cost without knowing the entire scope of the work involved I couldn't even begin to guess a price.
Pricing is also subject to what a companies cost of doing business is.
I assure you that the price I charge here in Connecticut would be considerably higher than what is charged in your area.
The cost for such a job is time and material because there is no way of determining all the work that needs to be done until all the leaks are found and fixed.

The reason why I say I would hire a different plumber is when I have a customer that has frozen up and is leaking I thaw the pipes and repair the leaks completely restoring service to the home. I do not stay for an hour or, 2 and repeat the same thing 3 days in a row.

Showing up 2 hrs at a time over several days to do a straightforward job is pretty disrespectful to a customer. I too think you need someone more professional.

You said "they", which implies more than one person. If so, that is at least 6 man hours so far, and if the job just need 4 more man hours to finish, plus material costs, that could amount to about $1,100.00, or so. It depends on the going labor rate in your area. If you are being charged by a "flat rate" plumber the cost would be the same regardless of whether it took one hour or 2 days, but they also make sure they charge you as if it would take two days, (that is so they can be sure NOT to lose money on the job). If it is time and material, it makes no difference what they are doing the rest of the time, since they should only charge you for their time at the job, (including "travel time"). But the bigger question is "how small is your house if they can do a complete repipe in a matter of 4 or 5 hours, or are they NOT doing a complete repipe? Another one would be, "Why did they say all the piping needed replacement if the problems were caused by freezing, and not deterioration?
