delta push button diverter streams water

I have a delta, ball-type shower faucet..... water sprays through the push button diverter, and sometimes it diverts water to the shower head, sometimes it doesn't. What do I need to do to fix this?

diverter

Replace the diverter.
May need to go to a retail plumbing store.

Replace the diverter, because when it breaks that pushbutton rod is going to fly out of the valve and can do damage to a critical part of the male anatomy.
