It seems like cheap insurance to crimp on 2 SS clamps at a pex connection. The fittings seem long enough to accept even 3.

Anyone doing that?

Sure looks to like the SS oetiker type clams could be much WIDER to grab more barbs. One clamp seems to only utilize one or 2 barbs.

The crimp should be installed between the barbs, and compress the tubing so the adjacent barbs have pressure on them. Place extra ones on there, and you'll likely end up keeping the tubing straighter and on a barb, rather then inbetween. If you consider the Wirsbo (Uphonor) method, there is NO crimp ring, and it seals well because there is tension on the barbs. The extra pex ring just ensures you get more even pressure. If you compare their fittings with crimp style, they have more barbs and closer together. Done properly, either method works. I think it's harder to get a bad one with Wirsbo, but that's me.

I agree the expander grips all the barbs and is likely superior. But its a pain to use and fit in tight spots. Are you agreeing that 2 well placed crimp clamps "imitates" the expander system?

No, I think you'll end up with a more reliable seal with one, properly placed crimp. That would cause the tubing to have pressure on the two adjacent barbs. Put another on on, and it may end up on a barb, or preventing the deflection when compressed between them. This is all just guessing. There are probably millions of leak-free joints installed using one...why try to second guess the manufacturer?
