Hello,

Pardon if a foolish question but I am replacing a toilet. House was manufactured in 1989. Original toilet removed by me.(Original owner) I measured from the center of the drain to the drywall and it is 10.5" but when I measure the the toilet bolt holes it is 12"

I am thinking my rough in is 10" but I have read where the measure from the bolt holes is preferred.

Which is the more accurate?

Rough in is measured from the finished wall, not the molding to the center of the closet flange.

Yes, I saw that drawing. I said drywall not molding.

it is 10.5" to your indicated mark in the center of the drain in the drawing above but the locating holes are where f of "of" is and that is 12"

So that is why I ask 10 or 12?

The bolts are usually centered on the flange as well...

Could you post a picture of the flange and bolts?

It is possible to slide the bolts some on the flange, but 1-1/2" is more than most would allow. Basically, forget where the bolts are unless they are centered on the flange. The bolts can be moved, if necessary. Toilets come in 10, 12 (normal), and 14" rough-ins. If the center of the flange is 12" from the finished wall, then the bolts should be able to be positioned to put a standard 12" rough-in toilet in. The old one may have been a 10", and they were trying to pull it back further towards the wall.
