if the ( i want to call this a elbow) pipe that comes from the well head and connocects to the front of the pump has a small air leak can it cause the pump to go on and off every 5 min

Every well system should have a pressure gauge near the pressure tank and switch. If the pressure is dropping because of a leak, the pump will cycle every time the pressure drops to the cut-in pressure of the switch.
