Lead P trap under tub?

Finally dug down to remove the old trap and put in the new before going back in with a new tub. The old trap is lead which is news to me but I'm not a plumber. Has a nice kink in it too which explains the constant slow drain problems. The lead appears to be bonded to a short piece of galvanized pipe that is fit into the cast iron hub. The picture shows a bulge in the pipe where it looks to be bonded to the steel pipe. Was that standard practice?

Can I pull the lead off of the steel pipe and go with a no hub coupler and PVC trap and trap adapter? I was planning on going with a brass waste/overflow.

Is there another/better way?

I would remove the steel from out of the cast iron and pack a new pipe into the hub with lead wool. You may be able to find a no hub coupling that fits over the lead and steel. Maybe a coupling for 2" thin wall plastic.

That connection is "weird". It should be a brass "fitting" because they could NOT bond lead to galvanized, but then that does not look like any "wiped joint" I have ever seen either.Remove the lead and the joint and you may be able to connect to the pipe with "transition coupling".

Thanks for the advice. Guess I need to remove the lead and see what I have to work with for sure.
