The shutoff valve for the refrigerator water line will not close completely. Water still leaks from line with the valve handle in the closed position. This is not a problem as long as the line is hooked to the fridge - but if the refrigerator is removed (like when we sell the house) we're going to have a leak.

Do you think I can just replace the valve stem (assuming I can locate the exact same valve [Jameco]), as opposed to replacing the entire valve. Or maybe put new packing in the stem? If this is not a good idea, is there a trick for removing the entire valve? I don't know if the valve body was screwed to an adapter or soldered in place(???) when the house was built.

If things really got ugly, and I couldn't remove the valve, I could access the line from the garage which is directly below.

Put a 1/4" compression cap on the valve when you sell the house. It won't be a problem for the new owner either.

Jameco was bought out by Watts you might try them to see if you can get a replacement stem...

the majority of those valves have interchangeable stems, but all you really need is a new washer on the one you have.
