Toto toilet running

I am not very handy so excuse the lack of correct terminology. My toto toilet is a 1.6gpf toilet. The tank keeps filling with water and it keeps flushing the toilet by itself. I finally had to shut off the water valve. Help!

Sounds like a bad flapper.

If the water never goes over the overflow tube, and the tank refills, replace the flapper.

If the water goes up and over the overflow tube, then the fill valve needs repair or replacement.
